2019–2025: Societal and political polarization reaches a fever pitch globally. The first "engineered plague" events are initially dismissed as conspiracy theories, but localized, weaponized pathogens begin to destabilize developing nations.


2026–2028: A series of devastating climate-triggered resource wars erupt, primarily over fresh water and rare earth minerals. Major powers engage in proxy conflicts that blur the lines between corporate militias and national armies.


2029: The "Great Fracture." A catastrophic, coordinated cyber-attack collapses the global financial network. Digital currency and traditional markets vanish overnight, leading to worldwide economic paralysis and the first wave of true societal collapse in vulnerable regions.

2031–2045: The Firestorm

2031: In the chaos, a limited nuclear exchange occurs between two secondary powers. The precedent is set; the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction is proven obsolete.


2035: The Atomic Holocaust: A cascading conflict draws in major powers. Strategic and tactical nuclear weapons are deployed across multiple continents. The Pacific coast of the former United States is hit with several warheads, not by a foreign power, but by a secessionist biotech conglomerate attempting to carve out its own territory. The target cities are shattered.


2037–2045: The Collapse. Nuclear winter is mitigated by prior climate chaos but is replaced by "Atomic Autumn"—persistent storms and bruise-colored skies from particulates. Governments dissolve. What remains are corporate enclaves, militarized survivalist compounds, and sprawling refugee shantytowns around the ruins of the coastal cities.

2046–2070: The Necropolis Rises

2046: The settlement that will become Purgatory is officially founded. It's not a community, but a negotiated "Free Zone" between the Wolfhounds (an amalgamation of ex-military, mercenaries, and augmented gang lords) and the surviving syndicates controlling chem-labs and flesh markets.


2050s: Infrastructure is not rebuilt for living, but for exploitation. Skeletal skyscrapers are fortified into gang fortresses. The first "Temples" (brothels) and underground fighting pits are established as primary economic engines. "Bliss" is synthesized, creating the first chemically loyal underclass.


2060: The Great Purge. The Wolfhounds, now the de facto rulers, systematically ban all monotheistic religions. Holy texts are burned in massive pyres in the central plazas. Preachers and worshippers are hunted to eradicate any ideology that might promise salvation or foster unity beyond hedonistic consumption. This solidifies Purgatory's core philosophy: the present moment of sensation is the only truth.


2065: Holographic advertising networks are restored, exclusively for pornography, chem-adverts, and gladiatorial death-match promotions. The perpetual neon glow becomes a defining feature. The "Rapture Runs" are invented as a popular sport.

2071–2089: The World Solidifies into Rot

2071–2085: Purgatory's culture of extreme violence and sex becomes ritualized. Fertility cults emerge to breed a steady supply of laborers, soldiers, and courtesans. Surgical and genetic modification becomes commonplace for both enhancement and grotesque entertainment (e.g., eye-replacement cameras).


2080s: Reports begin of "demonic entities" and mysterious kidnappings in the outskirts. Whether these are mutants, psychological phenomena from widespread chem-use, or something else is a source of fearful speculation but no organized investigation. The city consumes itself too eagerly to care.


2089: Present Day. Purgatory is a self-sustaining engine of degradation. It has fully metabolized the apocalypse. It doesn't remember the world before, nor does it want to. The concepts of "consent," "redemption," and "tomorrow" are extinct. The city exists in a state of perpetual screaming now—a monument to the end of the world, built from its wreckage.

The Atomic Holocaust remains as one of, if not, the most devastating events to ever happen in human history. The nuclear firestorm had not only shattered cities but also shattered the very fabric of what it meant to be human—replacing hope with ash, life with decay, and tomorrow with an infinite, radioactive night.
